Young Scientists Program at Kealing Middle School
The Young Scientists (YS) Program at Kealing Middle School is a dynamic academic and enrichment initiative that helps low-income students thrive in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.)
Founded in 1993 and powered by a partnership between Austin ISD and UT Austin’s UTeach Program, YS provides year-round, multi-year support that nurtures curiosity, builds academic confidence, and prepares students for advanced coursework, college, and STEM careers.
Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
YS delivers daily academic monitoring, targeted tutoring, and engaging STEM activities that connect classroom learning to real-world challenges. Programming is offered during school, after school, on weekends, and throughout the summer ensuring consistent, flexible support that meets students where they are.
Holistic Support for Students and Families
The program prioritizes students from low-income and first-generation college-bound families, especially those with untapped academic potential. YS collaborates closely with families, offering workshops, regular academic updates, and vital support services such as access to food, clothing, and benefits. This wraparound approach ensures students have the tools, encouragement, and stability they need to thrive.
A Bridge to High School and Beyond
YS helps students build strong foundations in middle school that prepare them for success in high school and college. Many participants go on to attend competitive high schools like the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) and continue receiving guidance through partnerships with UTeach Outreach, Austin Urban Scholars, and other academic support programs.
STEM for All: Support the Mission
Austin is a national leader in innovation and technology, but not all students share equal access to the academic opportunities that lead to STEM careers. Young Scientists is changing that by opening doors for students who may otherwise be left out.
Your support can help us reach more students, deepen our enrichment offerings, and provide essential services to families in need.
Help us build the future of STEM one young scientist at a time. Contact Associate Director of Development, Dean Curran, for more information.
