Young Scientists Program at Kealing Middle School
The Young Scientists (YS) Program at Kealing Middle School is a dynamic academic and enrichment initiative that helps low-income and underrepresented students thrive in STEM—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Founded in 1993 and powered by a partnership between Austin ISD and UT Austin’s UTeach Program, YS offers year-round, multi-year support that nurtures curiosity, builds academic confidence, and prepares students for advanced coursework, college, and STEM careers.
Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators
YS provides daily academic monitoring, targeted tutoring, and engaging STEM activities that connect classroom learning to real-world applications. Students participate in programming offered during school, after school, on weekends, and throughout the summer—ensuring consistent, accessible support
A cornerstone of the program is the UT PREP Summer STEM Pathway—a rigorous, four-year sequence of college-prep STEM camps at UT Austin. These experiences are transformational, helping students develop critical thinking, technical skills, and the confidence to see themselves as future STEM professionals.
Holistic Support for Students and Families
The program prioritizes students from low-income and first-generation college-bound families—especially those with untapped potential. YS also partners with parents and caregivers, offering workshops, academic updates, and support services like food, clothing, and benefit assistance.
YS meets students where they are—academically and personally—ensuring they have the tools and stability they need to succeed.
A Bridge to High School and Beyond
Many YS students go on to attend top high schools like the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) and continue receiving support through partnerships with Austin Urban Scholars, UT Outreach, and other programs that guide them through high school and into college.
