After school Science Olympiad Clubs for Grades 6–8

After School Science Olympiad Clubs for Grades 6–8

These clubs inspire students to pursue their interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). After completing all the weekly meetings, students participate in a Mini Science Olympiad competition held at The University of Texas at Austin competing against other local clubs for trophies and bragging rights. University UTeach Interns and UTeach Outreach students deliver hands-on STEM lessons to these clubs each week with the support of a teacher sponsor at each school.

For registration please fill out the follow permission slip: 6AS Permission Slip Packet Spring 2018.

Advantages of joining this club

UTeach Outreach lessons build upon the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) requirements and the local districts' curriculum. Students who participate in afterschool clubs learn hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math lessons that are aligned and go beyond the TEKS and are given the opportunity to:

  • Increase their self-confidence by participating in fun interactive activities.
  • Foster their interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
  • Develop higher math and science inquiry skills.
  • Increase their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Improve their daily understanding of core material during the school year.

About the Mini Science Olympiad Competition

The UTeach Outreach program is preparing students to compete in a mini competition against other sixth-graders in the Austin area at the end of each semester. The competition is held at UT and is based on the Science Olympiad competitions and organization. Unlike Science Olympiad, this is not a national competition, but events will be similar to events performed at the Science Olympiad. This initiative serves to encourage students to continue to seek participation in the National Science Olympiad Competition.

FAQs

When does the UTeach Outreach Club meet?

Clubs are hosted weekly at each school with two University of Texas student leaders facilitating lessons and team building. Our students will come to your classroom one day per week, for 1.5 to 2 hours, for 8-9 weeks during the semester, culminating in a competition at the end of the semester at UT. Students will have to ask their science teacher for specific days and times.

Where does the UTeach Outreach Science Olympiad Club meet?

Our Science Olympiad Club is an afterschool program at local middle or elementary schools and is designed to engage students in science, technology, math, and engineering topics using hands-on activities.

UTeach Outreach will partner with ten or more middle and elementary schools to host after-school clubs in the Austin area. The club usually meets at their 6th grade classroom.

How much does it cost to attend?

As long as your child is attending one of the schools we currently serve, the club will not cost you anything. We provide the materials and staff requried because we believe every student deserves the chance to find their passion in science, technology, engineering, and math.

UTeach Outreach is a free science education outreach program also run through UTeach and the College of Natural Sciences. UTeach Outreach invites all eligible 6th grade students to participate for free.

My students are bilingual/largely Spanish speaking. What can UTeach do in this situation?

All of our lessons provide both English and Spanish translations of worksheets. In most cases ,a billingual host teacher will also be present.

We try our best to match Spanish speakers with bilingual classrooms, but generally we rely on our host teachers or the classroom children to help translate. Also, much of our material is hands on and can be partially understood from a visual perspective. Many of our experienced Bilingual teachers’ team-teach the lesson along with the English speaking Outreach teachers.

Does my student need to bring anything?

After their permisson slip gets turned in, they only need curiousity and a sharpened pencil!

All materials are provided by UTeach Outreach.

Who are the program instructors?

Program instructors are current UT students taking our course. As always, a teacher from your child's school will be present at all times.

UTeach Outreach provides your student’s school with two University of Texas students who will deliver exciting lessons for all students interested in joining the UTeach Outreach STEM Club.

How do I register my student?

Have your child ask his/her science teacher and they will provide the time/day of the Science Olympiad Club. Your child will also need to return a permission slip, found at the top of this webpage, or they can ask their science teacher.
